It used to be the case that if a major listed company was forced to restate earnings, for whatever reason, this action was followed by the resignation of the chief executive, finance director and every other senior management operative who failed to spot or stop the original errors creeping in to the figures.

Dell’s admission that it will have to restate earnings, resulting in a $150 million (£75 million) write-down is a classic example of the changing view of a profits restatement. The management of the PC maker remains unchallenged, for now, despite the fact that four years worth of figures are in question. Dell is the latest to join the list of household-name technology companies affected by a financial investigation. Other companies have been hit with investigations that have exposed inflated earnings, forcing a restatement, to illegally backdating share options.

The thing is, Dell is an important part of the IT industry, and is responsible for a significant proportion of desktop and laptop PCs, as well as servers in use in business, and that’s before we even consider consumer users. IT departments around the world are likely exposed to and expected to support at least some Dell kit, so seeing the company compromised is unlikely to benefit the industry as a whole, or users, and would almost certainly reduce competition and inflate prices.

However, the ongoing internal and external investigations into its financial statements remains concerning for users. While it should not impact on the ability of the company to supply its products, it is important, as it would be for any company, to reassure users that this financial glitch won’t affect the world’s second-largest PC maker and its ability to continue doing what it does best.
